Youth Engagement in Agriculture and Farmer Regeneration: A Place-Based Perspective Using Bourdieu’s Framework

Youth engagement in agriculture is an important component of farmer regeneration; however, patterns of engagement may vary according to regional characteristics. This study aims to analyze youth characteristics, differences in farming choices, and supporting factors and interest in farming across three regional typologies in Kediri Regency, Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach was employed involving 156 respondents from three regional typologies: Agro-Agricultural/Slope, Peri-urban/Transition, and Food Agricultural Plains. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, the Respondent Achievement Level (TCR), and the Chi-Square test, while qualitative data were collected through interviews to support and enrich the interpretation of the quantitative findings.The findings indicate that youth engagement in agripreneurship is shape by the interaction of field conditions, access to various forms of capital, and habitus developed through agricultural experiences. These relationships vary across regional typologies due to differences in commodities, resource availability, social networks, and economic opportunities. Therefore, farmer regeneration efforts should adopt a place-based approach by strengthening existing capital and local potential while addressing resource and opportunity constraints according to regional conditions, with the aim of supporting sustained youth engagement as agricultural entrepreneurs and future farmers.
