Mastitis is a disease that frequently affects lactating dairy cattle. This disease can reduce milk production and quality. This community service activity aims to introduce the California Mastitis Test (CMT) as a rapid, practical, and field-applicable method for screening for mastitis. Dairy farmers at the SVD Halikelen Agriculture and Livestock Unit reportedly had never received training on mastitis, and the dairy cows they raised had never undergone diagnostic testing for this disease. Therefore, an introduction to mastitis and to detecting it early through a quick, practical test, the CMT was provided. The methods used in this activity were training and demonstrations, which included providing materials and hands-on practice with the CMT test. With the implementation of this community service, it is hoped that the Halikelen Agriculture and Livestock Unit can routinely perform early mastitis detection, protecting the cows being raised from the disease and preventing it from affecting milk production and quality.
